Animal Farm Comprehension Activities Booklet!
This resource booklet contains a wide range of age-appropriate, engaging, and meaningful comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm.’ Teachers have found them particularly useful in exam revision, comprehension tasks, or guided reading sessions. They are perfect for aiding the progress of students towards meeting the KS4 expectations within the new National Curriculum framework - this makes the tasks suitable for all examining bodies. Students have found these resources extremely engaging, and for teachers there is explicit information within each task regarding which comprehension strands the task is designed to demonstrate. They also relate to key extracts, characters, and themes from the story, ensuring that students gain a deep understanding of the text.
Activities within the booklet include:
- ‘Context: The Russian Revolution’ - to aid students with ‘Drawing on knowledge of the purpose, audience and context of the writing, including its social, historical and cultural context and the literary tradition to which it belongs, to inform evaluation;’
- ‘Orwell’s Description’ - to aid students with ‘Analysing a writer’s choice of vocabulary, form, grammatical and structural features, and evaluating their effectiveness and impact;’

Classifying Animals!
This detailed and engaging lesson enables students to gain an understanding of what animal classes are, and which animals belong to the different categories. Furthermore, they learn to categorise animals themselves, using scientific knowledge of the features of each animal class. Students justify their choices using critical thinking skills.
Students learn through a number of fun and interactive tasks, which enable them to:
- Define each animal class and understand its features;
- Exemplify each animal class, justifying their choices;
- Use research and investigative skills to categorise animals for whom the class is not immediately obvious;
- Evaluate the learning and understanding of themselves and their peers.

Asia: Physical and Human Geography (People and Places)
This interesting and highly-stimulating lesson enables students to describe and understand the key aspects of physical geography (e.g. climates, vegetation belts, flora, fauna, mountains, and rivers) and human geography (e.g. types of settlement, populations, use of resources, and trade) in the vast and varied continent of Asia. Whilst gaining a wide range of knowledge about the content, students also become familiar with a wide range of vocabulary pertinent to the geography curriculum.
The lesson follows a clear, logical, bite-size learning journey, which guides students towards relevant and constructive learning objectives. Over the course of this journey, they become able to:
- Identify Asia on a map, and identify the countries and regions within Asia;
- Understand key information about the physical and human geography of the continent, through a fun, interactive quiz;
- Retrieve, share, and describe their understanding of the physical and human geography of specific locations in Asia (Dubai, Yala National Park, Gobi Desert, and Tokyo) through a jigsaw model task;
- Complete a case study of the physical and human geography of their own place in Asia, and describe their findings to others;
-Peer assess each other’s descriptions using the learning objectives.
This resource pack includes:
- A visually engaging whole-lesson PowerPoint presentation;
- Key case-study information sheets on Dubai, the Gobi Desert, Yala National Park and Tokyo;
- A blank case study template;
- A detailed lesson plan, complete with what the teacher and students should aim to achieve at each stage of the lesson.

They are perfect for aiding the progress of students towards meeting the key English Literature assessment objectives - suitable for all examining bodies. Students have found these resources extremely engaging, and it is clearly highlighted within each task regarding which assessment strands the task is designed to demonstrate.
Activities within the booklet include:
‘Analysing Context’ - helping students to ‘Show understanding of the relationships between texts and the contexts in which they were written.’
‘Analysing Subject Matter, Language and Structure’ - to help students to ‘Analyse the language, form and structure used by a writer to create meanings and effects, using relevant subject terminology where appropriate.’
‘Diary Entry’ - to help students to ‘Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate spelling and punctuation. Make an informed personal response, recognising that other responses to a text are possible and evaluating these.’

Amazon Forest Floor Animals - Whole Class Reading Session!
This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s comprehension skills whilst developing their understanding of the animals of the forest floor in the Amazon Rainforest.
The original information text includes the following sections:
-Introduction to the Forest Floor
-Large Mammals on the Forest Floor: Jaguars, Giant Anteaters, Tapirs
-Reptiles, Insects and Creepy Crawlies: Green Anacondas, Arachnids, Leafcutter Ants.
-Summary of Life on the Forest Floor
The hunting, dietary habits, appearance and behaviour of each animal are described, in addition to providing interesting facts in accessible language.
The resource pack includes the extract and all of the activities for the session, which the class are guided through via a comprehensive and engaging PowerPoint presentation. The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language.
The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions, fact-checking and deeper thinking activities.
An additional scaffolded worksheet for children needing additional support/ structure is also provided (in both Word and PDF).
The session is best suited for children in KS2 (I originally used the resources with a year 4 class), but with minor adaptations may be used for slightly older and younger year groups.

Nothing's Changed - Comprehension Activities Booklet!
This 16-page resource booklet contains a wide range of challenging and engaging comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of Tatamkhulu Afrika’s poem 'Nothing’s Changed.’ They are perfect for aiding the progress of students learning poetry either in KS3 and KS4 in preparation for poetry/unseen poetry at GCSE, as the tasks draw on English Literature assessment objectives - suitable for all examining bodies - it is clearly highlighted within each task regarding which assessment strands the task is designed to demonstrate.

Stating Your Case for the World's Greatest Sportsperson!
In this engaging and interactive lesson, students make the case for who they feel is the greatest sportsperson of all time. Within the lesson they develop skills of: persuasive writing, independent researching, personal and social comprehension, and speaking and listening. By the end of the lesson, students write and present their own case for the world’s greatest sportsperson, using individually researched subject matter, structural advice, and understanding of persuasive techniques.
The learning follows a logical, bitesize journey, in which students:
- Discuss and define the key features of what they think makes a sportsperson ‘great’;
- Research how their own contender meets the features of greatness, using a well-scaffolded research template;
- Understand and exemplify each of the persuasive techniques, useful in convincing others of their case;
- Critically analyse the language, subject matter, and structure of a model example of a World’s Greatest Sportsperson article;
- Write, present, and assess their own article.
Included is everything that you need to teach, including:
- Comprehensive, well-presented whole-lesson PowerPoint (students are led through the learning journey by an animated Usain Bolt character!);
